The Bombay Chamber Orchestra (BCO) and The Bombay District E.C.  Grand Charity present Freemasnory In The East, a musical soiree celebrating the tercentenary of the United Grand Lodge of England.  The programme includes Lizst’s Hungarian Fantasia for piano and orchestra and other popular works by masonic composers, including Mozart, Sibelius, Gershwin and others.  American conductor, Karen Gorden, will conduct the 50+-member orchestra and Mumbai-born pianist, Marialena Fernandes, presently based in Vienna, will be the featured soloist.

Karen Gorden has proven herself to be one of the most vibrant and compelling conductors on the international music scene today.  In demand as a guest conductor, she has been invited to the podiums of leading symphony orchestras including the National Symphony Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Minnesota Orchestra.  Maestro Gorden’s contributions to music have been recognized with an International Cultural Exchange Award from the French Government, an Arts Council Artist’s Project Grant, the Prix Nadia Boulanger (France), and the Opera Prize of the State Theater Opava (Czech Republic).

Born in Mumbai, Marialena Fernandes attained the musical Diploma LRSM. In 1972, she received a scholarship for further musical education at the formal Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. She performs solo, chamber music and at orchestral concerts in most European capitals, as also in USA, Australia, Africa and Asia. She has regularly appeared in annual TV and Radio Broadcasts. She is the Artistic Director and International Program Curator in crossover and experimental projects, in which she incorporates classical, ethno, jazz and world music fusions with an emphasis on improvisation.
